Authentic Coffee Experience Near Medellín, Colombia
Explore authentic Colombian coffee experiences near Medellín. Discover options for day trips to coffee farms, avoiding longer journeys to the Zona Cafetera.
Okay, if you want a coffee experience and a day trip outside Medellín, Salento is too far, that's in the Zona Cafetera near Armenia. Closer to Medellín, you have a few options, but for authentic, I'd suggest something less touristy than Guatapé (though Guatapé is beautiful, the coffee there is mostly for the views). Look into going to a finca (coffee farm) in the mountains near the town of Jardín. Jardín itself is a beautiful, colorful town, very Antioquian. You can take a bus from Medellín's Terminal del Sur. The ride is about 3 hours. Once in Jardín, ask around for a finca cafetera that offers tours. Many smaller, family-run farms offer a much more personal experience than the big commercial ones. You'll see the whole process, from bean to cup, and the coffee will likely be better and cheaper. Plus, Jardín is just a really nice place to wander around for the day. Bring comfortable shoes for walking, and maybe a light jacket, as it can get cool in the mountains. Another option, slightly closer but maybe less picturesque, is Santa Elena. This is closer to Medellín and known for its flower farms (fincas de flores) and the silleteros (flower growers) who participate in the Feria de las Flores. Some farms also grow coffee. Check online for tours before you go. You can take a bus from Medellín to Santa Elena. It's a shorter trip, maybe an hour or so.
